The last few years has seen the rise of the Belgians in the Premier League with Christian Benteke, Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany proving a success at their clubs.
However, Everton have two of their own Belgians of repute. We all know about Marouane Fellaini and his beloved afro – with helped him net his 12th goal of the campaign against Reading. Showing why he should be shortlisted for Player of the Year.
But Kevin Mirallas is also rapidly making a name for himself at the club. Mirallas scored Everton’s third goal on Saturday as well as supplying the ball for Steven Pienaar’s great strike to add to his goal against Oldham on Tuesday. However the stats do not do his talent any justice, with Reading goalie Taylor saving a shot from him before his goal, not being able to deny the Belgian twice.
Moyes feels that Mirallas is finally back to full fitness after a niggling hamstring injury kept him side-lined for the best part of three months during the winter.
With the winger looking a bargain for the £6million we paid Olympiakos for him in the summer, with him proving to be a player to keep the fans on the edge of their seats. He simply makes things happen and has been one of the clubs most exciting players this season.
And with Jelavic currently struggling to find his fine form of last season, Moyes is delighted to see Mirallas in such form.
“We’ve needed someone to get on the end of things,” said Moyes. “I thought Nikica played well, but things aren’t going his way right now, so to have Kevin providing that threat is really important.”
This underlines Mirallas’ value to us as we chase FA Cup glory and European football. Moyes continues to insist that Jelavic will start scoring again, but we’ll just have to sit and hope that he starts his running streak on the path to Wembley.
After bagging himself 11 goals last season, his current form is lacking this season – he has seven this season with only one since the start of December. But from his current blistering form it’s clear that Mirallas can help make up Jela’s shortfall.
