Naismith: We weren’t at our sharpest

Everton forward Steven Naismith has said that his side weren’t at their best in the 2-2 draw with Leicester on Saturday and says that the result is disappointing as they felt they were in control of the match.

The Scot scored the second goal taking Everton into a 2-1 lead before Leicester equalised with only minutes to go to earn the foxes a draw and Naismith says that the squad must move on from their disappointment.

Naismith said:  “They’re the games you want to be involved in and we showed that very well with them last season. The manager will expect that again from us this year.”

Reflecting on the draw against the newly-promoted Foxes, Naismith highlighted the readiness his teammates showed.

“It’s so disappointing, because we felt we were in control,” he added. “Even when we took the lead, we moved the ball around well.

“Maybe we weren’t at our sharpest but we did move the ball out, made their players work and kept it for good spells.

“But with them playing two out-and-out strikers it did cause us problems when they won possession back. The overriding feeling is definitely disappointment.

“Through pre-season we’ve worked on different styles of play in moving on from what we did last season. The boys felt really confident and I think it showed with how we controlled the game.”

    1. All the reports that i’ve read since saturday feature two main points, that Everton feel immensely sorry for themselves and have been VERY uncomplimentary about Leicester City, why the constant whining negativity?…look at the positives, It was the first game of the season away from home, you were playing a team that walked their league last year and were high on confidence, you scored two cracking goals and took a point back north with you to get your season underway!…….what is there not to like?…….instead all we’ve heard are excuses as to why you did’nt pick up all three points!….lets look at some facts……1) You have no divine right to the result just because you have been in the league longer than we have!…2) You have no divine right to the result just because you finished in 5th place last season (Congrats and very well done by the way) and we came up from the league below!…….3)your passing was better than ours as was your ball retension!…….BUT at the end of the match your shaky back line had allowed us two openings from which we scored as was the case the other end….result…2-2….you did’nt win because you did’nt score a third AND you let two in!…..it would have been nice if you could have been a little more gracious in your summing up (in the media as a whole)…..it was a big day for us after so long away, but, for me anyway it’s been a little soured by the abuse that’s come our way because we had the temerity to fight back!……i must say i expected more from grounded scousers
Try and take your point and your positives with good grace!!!

      • Hi Tazzy,

Thanks for the comment. I don’t think you can class the media as Scousers. We have come along way since our fall from grace in the 90’s and recently we have established our selves back in the top 6 and we are looking to push on from there. I don’t think Everton fans think we have a divine right to win, I think we expected to win and probably should have. We look low on fitness and with a few injuries look a little disjointed. I expect Leicester to stay up and build from there. I don’t think you have an amazing squad yet, but you have players going forward that are capable of getting something from nothing.#

Well done on your point and hopefully you can build from there.

        Cheers
