Martinez: We can compete for the title without money

Martinez: We can compete for the title without money

Roberto Martinez has come out in support of his players saying that his squad can compete for the Premier League title, even without the millions being spent by Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

The Everton manager sees the academy as the perfect way to close the gap on sides with more money and says that by producing our own excellent youth that the club can be up there fighting for Champions League football next season or higher.

He said: “I do think it is important for us that we get stronger after this season.

“I do feel we will be stronger next campaign after what we have been through this year.

“There is a feeling in the squad we are ready to get into the top four places, which is very important.

“At the beginning of this season it is fair to say we didn’t know if we could compete for those places.

“Even though we have just missed out on the top four, there is a real feeling if we work well and push ourselves we can have a proper challenge for it next season.

“We cannot compete against the likes of Manchester City in terms of finances, but I believe we can compete in other ways, through producing our own young players.

“I don’t buy into the idea we can’t compete against Manchester City because we don’t have the same money – there are other ways we can compete and you need to find them.”

    1. I think that all that has been missing is belief and that if they had thought that way last season, not to mention this,we would have had a tilt at the top. Just before they went on their jolly after Christmas we were flying and had hardly dropped any points. When they returned everything was sloppy and half hearted and we dropped points all over the shop. The year before all the usual suspects were vulnerable and all we heard was how we should be appeased because we were obviously punching above our weight. United won the Prem with the worst set of players in it’s history. If we hadn’t been using spoiling/negative tactics we might just have started this revival twelve months earlier.
