Martinez: We are not built to keep clean sheets
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has hailed his defence, but conceded that his side aren’t built to keep clean sheets.
The Spaniard feels that his side are set up to be a more attacking unit but says he is delighted that his side aren’t shipping goals in.
“We are not built to keep clean sheets. That’s the truth,” he said.
“We are built to be attacking and score goals but we have to defend, and when you look at that clean sheet many people will be pleased.
“We are pleased that we kept a clean sheet but also had the best chances of the game and created clearcut opportunities.
“That’s the right balance. We didn’t compromise and say ‘I want a clean sheet in every game and if we get a chance, so be it’.
“I’m pleased with the clean sheet because it was as a consequence of everyone working well with a lot of tactical organisation but we had a real threat going forward.
“I thought we were very strong at the back end of the last campaign and defending and keeping clean sheets is an effort of 11 players.
“It’s not just the back four and the keeper.”
