Martinez: Ross will learn from penalty miss and become a great player

Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that he is glad that Ross Barkley missed his penalty against Burnley as his performance after missing showed someone whos experience is growing and been playing at a high level.

Barkley stepped up to take the penalty, much to the surprise of the Goodison Park faithful, but missed and Martinez feels that this will help him in his career long term.

Martinez said: “Ross didn’t shrink after that. I think that is the pleasing aspect.

“Once you win the game, you can look back at that incident.

“I’m happier that he missed it rather than score it because as an experience it doesn’t get any better than wanting to take the responsibility, wanting to score in front of the Park End and then the performance from that point on was like someone who has been playing at this level for his whole career.

“He is only a young man, he is only 21 and I was extremely impressed in the manner that he took responsibility, working for the team, doing his job, showing for the ball.

“The bravery of Ross Barkley is to get on the ball and always be available. I think today we got a better player after that display because of the experience of the penalty.”

He said: “I think the 90 minutes were a pure example of what the season has been for Ross.

“He comes from a World Cup experience then all of a sudden he has found expectations, responsibility and an interesting learning curve.

“Then playing in Europe for the first time, he never ever allowed himself to drop his standards. He has learned massively the way we all have from this demanding season.

“But I think you saw it probably without the experiences of earlier in the season, after the penalty he would have been affected by that moment but we have an incredible character who can become a great, great player.”
