Martinez: Joel can give us a really solid platform he has been a big influence
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been full of praise for second choice goalkeeper Joel Robles following his introduction to the first team recently.
The glovesman has had to step into the fray following the injury to first choice Tim Howard and the Catalan feels that now he is getting a sustained run of games, Everton fans are starting to see the best of him.
“Joel has been desperate to show every Evertonian just what a good goalkeeper he is and what he can be,” Martinez told evertontv. “It’s not easy to step in and perform at your best.
“I thought against Manchester City he showed signs of the keeper that he is and against West Ham that was him – a very confident young man who can give you a really solid starting platform in the team.
“At one point I thought the full script was written for him to become a hero and take us into the next round. He did everything he could and his performance was clearly highlighted by all his teammates.
“I think we are going to see a different Joel from now on.”
“Any position on the pitch needs a bit of continuity,” continued Martinez. “You need a bit of playing time and a bit of understanding of the players around you.
“As a goalkeeper I even think you need a bit more because you participate less in the games and your actions are more isolated.
“After a few games, he feels ready. He has been a big influence in the last couple of games and it has been important for him to be relaxed about what he can bring into the side.”
