Everton to beat Man United to signing of “New John Stones” from Barnsley?
Everton look set to snatch another young defender from the Barnsley academy with the signing of Mason Holgate according to the Daily Post.
The 18 year old had been training with Manchester United and looks destined to leave Oakwell if the right bid comes in and he looks set to snub Manchester as he looks to make an impact on a Premier League first team.
£1m is the fee being touted and Newcastle United are also interested in the young defender who has been linked to Arsenal and Spurs in the past.
He made 18 appearances for the Barnsley first team last season.

As a Barnsley fan I think young Holgate is of similar ability to John Stones at the same age but may be even more comfortable on the ball.
The comparison with Stones is being overplayed in my opinion. Whilst both have progressed via the Barnsley Academy, which is producing some fantastic talent, including George Smith, James Bree and more, Holgate would certainly benefit from another season in League One. Competitive game time would give his game consistency and help nurture his confidence. In time, Holgate could make it at the highest level. For now, I fear that he could lose momentum with any move. Whichever route out of Oakwell he decides to take – perhaps a loan back deal might be the best option? John Stones on the other hand was ready.
