Everton right-back sixty grand has come out and spoken about the club he loves and says that 11th isn’t good enough for a special club like Everton in an interview with the Daily Mail.
Seamus Coleman also says that Everton manager Roberto Martinez gave them a rollicking at half-time against Watford and says the he can have a mean streak.
Finishing 11th isn’t good enough for a special club like Everton,’ says Coleman. ‘We showed in Roberto’s first year what we could do. We outplayed teams home and away. Last season, teams gave us respect, sat back and we couldn’t break them down.
‘We didn’t defend right at times, our finishing wasn’t right at times and our play in the middle of the park wasn’t right.’
‘I don’t know what the club can spend. But we have players already in our changing room capable of beating most teams in this league. It is about putting last year out of our system.’
Encouragingly, Coleman has been on the winning team four times against City — albeit all under Moyes — most notably when he set up Tim Cahill for the winner at the Etihad in 2010.
Everton’s impressive 3-0 win at Southampton last week, with Romelu Lukaku scoring twice, also hinted at a turning point in their fortunes after being held by newly promoted Watford on the opening day.
‘The gaffer had a real go at half-time against Watford. He can’t be nice all the time. And as players, you can’t behave like spoilt children; if you take praise you have to take the bad as well.
‘We will take a lot of confidence from the Southampton game. We looked back to our old selves and when the big man at the top is in that form, he is brilliant. There are not many finishers like Rom where if he gets half a chance, nine times out of 10 he scores.’
