Browning: Once I got into the game I was alright
Everton defender Tyias Browning was delighted with his debut start in the Premier League and thinks he came through the tough test of facing Jefferson Montero well.
The Swansea City winger has been in excellent form this season but Browning believes that he coped well with the Ecuadorian winger and he hopes he has done enough to get a game in the league cup against Reading.
“I had an idea that I would be playing on Saturday, with Seamus being out, but I only found out on the day and I knew it would be a good challenge for me.
“It took me a couple of minutes to get going against him because he was at me from the start but once I got into the game I was alright.
“The lads were just telling me to keep going and stay on him because Montero was doing what I wanted him to do.”
He added: “I knew it would be a tough test but I’d rather face a tough challenge than nobody and the game has given me something to work on.
“Hopefully I’ve done enough to get a game next week.”

Browning really shows huge promise and all good luck to the youngster. I was surprised it was his debut. But a word of caution his early foul on Montero put the winger out of his stride for 60 minutes after which it did take two, sometimes three to defend against him (a well organised defence). That foul could have seen him booked (with a competent ref – which Atwell wasn’t, a problem I felt for both sides) should have drawn a yellow card and there were several other incidents in the first half just in front of me which could have got him yellow cards. Maybe Everton always play this way or maybe Roberto had seen the effect Watford’s tough approach (very hard but totally fair and within the rules) had over Swansea and instructed his team to foul as often as possible. Or possibly Barry & Naismith’s influence?
Whatever, and however fans saw the game Browning is a talent to be proud of – with the right mentoring I can see him representing England sooner rather than later.
