Martinez: Darron Gibson will not be leaving the club

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has defiantly said that midfielder Darron Gibson will not be leaving the club in the January transfer window, despite not playing much.

The Republic of Ireland international has barely played this season due to injury and fitness and only has 18 months left on his current contract and former Irish colleague and Everton player Kevin Kilbane said earlier this week that Gibson should leave the club in search of first team football.

“Well that’s just someone else’s comments but no from our point of view we just want to get Darron fully fit and for him to fight for a position,” Martinez told the Irish Examiner.

“Darron is a phenomenal midfielder. The attributes he brings into the squad, I don’t think anyone else has them.

“We want him fighting for his position in the team and to enjoy his football and that’s my only concern at the moment.”
