Lukaku explains his poor season last year
Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has described last year as his most difficult year saying that the illness of his father and the death of his best mate really impacted his game.
The big Belgian still scored 20 goals in a season where Everton struggled on the field and feels that this year with many things looking brighter he will be able to give at least 20% more.
“There were personal things,” he said. “It was my most difficult year. When I signed for Everton permanently my father (Roger) was very ill and I was not in a good place. The club knew about the situation and that I was going home all the time to see if he was alright. I am alone here. I also started the season off with a few injuries and there were a few games when I played when I was not fit. I had four injections in my foot before the Arsenal and Chelsea games. Then my friend Junior Malanda died. I really wasn’t good at that time. It was hard for me. It’s true for a footballer that if your life is good off the pitch you can always give that 20% more. I discovered there are some things you don’t know how to handle.
“People associate the footballer with the glamour but we have a life as well. For me, family has always been more important than football. My goal celebration now is for Junior but also for God.”
