Martinez: I will never bollock the players in public, only behind closed doors
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that he will never lambast his players in public, but that won’t stop him from tearing strips off them behind closed doors if he feels they aren’t doing something properly.
The Goodison crowd was vociferous with a chorus of boos and shouts in the first half of the Europa League match against Dynamo Kiev on Thursday and Martinez accepts that the first 30 minutes was poor.
“I could get angry in the players if they don’t do an exercise in training properly,” Martinez said.
“One thing I don’t accept is players dropping their standards but, in the same way, when we lose a football game the responsibility has to be mine, the manager.
“It shouldn’t be my job to come out and blame people – I need to take responsibility.
“We all know we hit rock bottom after that defeat but we need to face the situation and make sure we are all together and to make sure we get the wins we deserve and take our football club forward.
“But I will never be a manager who tries to find excuses or blames players for a defeat.
“I’ll take responsibility but, obviously, behind the scenes you can get really upset with people.”
