The world of transfers has gone crazy and Everton fans are getting worried
The world has officially gone mad. Swansea have just paid 6 million English pounds for Liverpool midfielder JonJo Shelvey, who although isn’t a bad player, certainly isn’t a top player; all of this done while the English press tout the best left-back in the Premier League, Leighton Baines, at a paltry £12m move to Manchester United.
Worth half as much as Baines?
Elsewhere Norwich, West Ham, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Swansea seem to be flashing the cash around whilst Everton seem to be getting linked with every Wigan player who ever played under Bob Martinez. This is all without the teams we are competing against, like Spurs and Arsenal, really doing that much yet.
So do Everton fans need to feel worried? They do and they don’t. We do have to bear in mind that the actual transfer window has only been open for 3 days and Roberto hasn’t even met his team yet, so should we really be wanting us to sign every player going……BUT…… we run the risk on missing out on some top talent. Andreas Cornelius, who Everton have been linked with has just joined Cardiff, Wilfried Bony (who could become a top Premier League striker) has all but completed a move to Swansea and longtime Everton target (He even joined us at one point before we pulled the plug) is now being linked with Norwich along with Nathan Redmond.
Good players but same old, same old?
We should be worried in the fact that we are potentially getting out muscled, aswell as outspent in the transfer window by the likes of Norwich and Swansea and we are only being linked with poor players like Aiden McGeady or ex Wigan players like Kone and Alcaraz.
When Roberto joined he said he would scour the globe for the best signings and not stick close to home. Although the homebased signings haven’t happened yet, it is a worry for Everton fans with some of the names we are being linked with.
The board needs to find the cash to move us onto the next level and not rely on the potential sales of Marouane Fellaini, Johnny Heitinga and Leighton Baines to fund this. If Heitinga and Fellaini go as expected, along with the other departures that will have freed close to £15m off the wage bill (before new staff costs are included) aswell as transfer fees. On top of this we have increased TV revenue and league placings and we have also just freed up an extra £400,000pa via Liverpool council for Finch Farm.
We need a marque signing or 2. We need a Keisuke Honda. We need a Wilfried Bony. We need a Leroy Fer.
Fer is making a decision next week
It is the boards job to find this money. IF we don’t spend at least £8m more than we recoup then it is poor. It is very poor. £8m was what they had to spend on Fer in January and on top of all the other savings and increases, this should be the minimum that they find. IF we only spent £8m I would be very annoyed as an Evertonian.
I will give the board of directors until the 1st of September, but if the signings don’t happen and we spend less than we have recouped, EVERY Evertonian should be demanding better.
We never had £8 million for Fer. Twente’s chairman came out about how Everton tried shifting the goalposts after a fee was agreed. Then the club made up some naff story about the lads knees.
The sides who have spent money all have established managers. Everton don’t he is bound to want to see what he has first, would be ridiculous to do otherwise. As I said, Swansea, Liverpool, Norwich etc would have all been identifying targets all last season.
