    The Next Everton Captain

    Next Everton Captain

We take a look at the likely contenders to be the next Everton Captain.  Being the Everton captain requires a certain type of person, someone who GETS the club.

    Phil Jagielka

Probably the most logical choice.  At 30 years of age, Jagielka has quite a few seasons left in the Premier League with Everton.  Jagielka brings natural leadership and organisation.  He leads from the front and wears his heart on his sleeve.  Bringing International experience will also have it’s merits.

    Darron Gibson

Outside chance.  The 25 year old from Derry could be an outside bet to get the captaincy.  Gibbo has already asked Neville for the armband via twitter! Having come from Sir Alex Fergusons stable at Manchester United, the talented midfielder could be a good choice to pick.  Comfortable and assured on the ball, Gibson is always talking to team mates and would be a good link from defence to attack.

    Leon Osman

Small Chance.  At 31, Ossie could have a small chance of being Captain.  He is experienced with the team having represented Everton at the top flight for over 10 years, he is a local lad and technically he is very good.  He does have a reputation for being the joker of the team though and the manager may feel he is more suited as a vice captain.

    Sylvain Distin

Small Chance.  Turning 36 this year, Distin is probably more suited to a club captain role.  A model professional and probably the fittest player in the squad, Distin has experience in abundance.  Always talking and leading, he would be a wise short term option, but long term he is likely to go the same way as Phil Neville soon.

    Marouanne Fellaini

Medium chance.  With Everton likely to miss out on a Champions League spot this year, the likelihood is that Fellaini will be leaving the blues.  That said, stranger things have happened.  IF Fellaini stays he could be the ideal candidate to become the blues captain.  As one of the best players in the toffees squad Fellaini is an accomplished international with a strong reputation.  He would lead by example, although he may often overstep the mark.  The captaincy could be used as a way of tempting Fellaini to stay.

In our opinion the likely successor to skipper Neville is Jagielka and he would certainly get our blessing.  Others in with a shout are Leighton Baines, Tony Hibbert and Tim Howard, although we think the 5 most likely are above.
