Sigurdsson wants Mersey Derby victory on Sunday

Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is desperate to avenge their 96th minute defeat in the Merseyside Derby.  The last time the teams played a fluke sliced shot hit the crossbar twice before rebounding straight into the path of Divock Origi and the Icelandic international believes a victory is badly needed.

Sigurdsson said it didn’t matter where their City neighbours are in the league, Everton always want to win this match, even-more-so when it means they can dent their title ambitions.

‘Of course, yes, but it doesn’t matter where they are in the league.

‘You always want to win these games, especially after the disappointing ending to the game the last time we played them.

‘To lose a derby game like that, being so close to a good point away from home, was very disappointing. These are the games you are looking forward to before the season starts.’

Sigurdsson also became the Premier Leagues highest-scoring Icelandic player with his brace against Cardiff seeing him overtake Eidur Gudjohnsen by 2 goals after reaching 57 goals.

‘I knew about it, I’d been waiting to get that,’ Sigurdsson said after taking his league goals tally for the season to 11.

‘I’m very proud. When I was growing up, he (Gudjohnsen) was the one I was watching.

‘I wanted to be like him and play in the Premier League. Hopefully he’ll give me a text. It’s fantastic to have finally gone over him.’

When will Everton next get a Merseyside Derby victory?
