Martinez: We start work straight after the final game to improve the squad

The job of being Everton manager is never done,  just ask current gaffer Roberto Martinez who has said he will look at the job of improving the Everton squad as soon as the final game is finished.

The Spanish boss is looking to add numbers to the squad as he is fully aware of the rigours that European football can have on a small squad and Martinez doesn’t want to give anyone that excuse.

“As soon as we finish the final game we start work, as we did last season, to try to build a stronger squad,” said Martinez.

“We have to make sure we have more numbers than last season. We don’t want to use the excuse of European football or any domestic competition affecting our league campaign.

“If we say that, it is because we haven’t assembled a strong enough squad at the beginning of the season.

“We are at a point where we want to embrace Europe. We want to finish fifth. We need to finish against Hull City showing good standards. And I do feel that the competitive edge in European football will help the team to develop – and as a football club it will help us to be as good as we can.”

    1. I really hope these aren’t empty words. During David Moyes’ tenure it always felt as if the club closed down after the last game of the season and only roused itself a few days before pre-season.Then there was a hiatus before any transfer dealings began, leading to a scramble just before the deadline. Roberto seems to never stop working on our behalf. I hope he takes a holiday,he really deserves it. And a couple of weeks in Brazil probably won’t count.
