Martinez: The scoreline is harsh and unfair

Everton manager Roberto Martinez was gutted with the scoreline in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea but was full of praise for his team and also the travelling Everton supporters.

Everton more than matched the league leaders for most of the game before a disputed free-kick lead to a 93rd minute winner for John Terry and Martinez fully believes that the free-kick should never have been given and replays show this.

“The scoreline is harsh and unfair, and it doesn’t reflect what we did on the pitch,” said Martinez. “In terms of coming to Stamford Bridge and playing in the manner that we did, it was very much Everton today and I’m pleased with that.

“We could’ve got a bit more joy in the final third with the amount of possession we had, but I felt we were magnificent in the first half and tactically the players were incredible. The way we defended and the way we attacked, we always carried a threat.”

He said: “I couldn’t see Chelsea scoring from open play. They got that free-kick, which the replays show shouldn’t have been given. That’s probably the hardest thing to take about the scoreline.”

Martinez added: “The performance was everything that our fans deserved, they were very vocal from the first second and that really gave us a great starting point.”

you should have made something out of your attacks instead of attacking just to be able to say at the end of the game “we attacked”
