Martinez: I’ll never tell a defender to go long ball

Long ball isn’t an option for Roberto Martinez this season.

“I’d never tell a defender to launch it because there is a reason behind it,” said the Spaniard.

“Maybe you will win a game but you’re not going to achieve your aim over the season.

“You’re always looking at the long-term. One thing is winning games but there is also knowing how to win games and that doesn’t happen overnight.

“If you want to have big results it has to be a big change, otherwise if you don’t change things you’re not going to have big changes.”

Martinez added: “The football concepts and the way of playing is very clear and you have to be quite stubborn.

“The short-term is getting through 90 minutes and not getting out of the comfort zone as a squad and not getting better.

“But what’s important is that over the course of the season you end up a better team. “It’s not just a short-term issue of trying to get through a game because that’s not going to take you on at the end.”

While Martinez accepts there will be inevitable teething troubles – such as Tim Howard’s error that almost allowed Samuel Eto’o in for a goal last weekend – he has expressed his surprise at the speed with which Everton’s players have taken on board his proposals.

“When you’ve got the ball it’s not about passing, it’s about the options around you and as a team we need to get better,” said the Spaniard.

“We’re not predictable at all. It’s going to be a transitional period but mistakes are going to make us a lot stronger and allow us to be a little bit different.

“It will take time and a bit of understanding but what we’ve done in 12 weeks is incredible. I don’t think you’d be able to do that with any other team in that short period of time.”

Martinez revealed his methods met with initial resistance from supporters when he first took over at Swansea City in 2007 before leading the club to promotion in his first full season. “At Swansea it took six or seven months to get the crowd to understand what we were trying to do,” said the Everton manager.

“We got booed off the pitch. No-one would now believe that happened, but we had a period of seven months in League One where we were getting booed off but once you assimilate the concepts and the way of playing, the crowd understands it and I don’t think the crowd at Swansea would accept any other way of playing now.

“I think the Goodison crowd is intelligent enough to see why you’re doing certain things and will always support the players when they’re trying to be brave for a reason.

“It’s one thing to be stupid and another is being brave and trying to see the end product.”
