Liverpool V Everton: 5 Things that will probably happen in the Merseyside Derby

    Players reffing the game

It’s understood that Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are on the FIFA shortlist to referee the next World Cup because they always referee the Merseyside Derby so well.  It’s become almost common place.  They can do it because they are great players.  It’s a lesson on what the Everton players need to do more…… They just don’t do it enough!

Yellow Card for a nothing Challenge

The Merseyside Derby (When Everton turn up and don’t let the reds walk all over us) is a normally a barnstorming game full of passion and quite a lot of referees in recent times haven’t understood how to ref the game.  This means that the first “meaty” challenge by either team can often result in a yellow card.  It’s generally not dirty, its just one of the players letting you know they are there!  There will probably be a red card to an influential player too!

Steven Gerrard to score at least one goal

It’s bound to happen! It ALWAYS happens! The man that Everton fans love to hate (mainly because he is that good at playing the game).  On derby day, Steven Gerrard normally scores.  Even if he was to do nothing all season, he would still score in the derby.  He could be 60 years old and Liverpool could bring him out of retirement and he would still score against Everton.

Camera to focus in on distraught supporter in the opposition end

It happens every year, no matter which team is losing, the sky cameras always pick up on the crying fan who is sitting with the opposition fans.  Doesn’t matter if they are red or blue the cameraman will always get the shot.  Surely it’s the turn for a crying red? Probably not though, as recent history shows that Everton just don’t turn up for derby matches!

    Mutual Respect for Hillsborough

Whether it’s brothers in arms, support for your neighbour or simply caring human nature – Liverpool and Everton fans will always be united by the tragic events of the Hillsborough disaster.  The people of Merseyside come together to grieve, unite, celebrate and respect the unfortunate 96 that lost their lives in Sheffield on that fateful day.  This weekends derby will show Liverpool fans at their greatest with a fan mosaic to say thanks to Everton fans, weeks after Everton Chairman Bill Kenwright gave an emotional Hillsborough speech.  Although the teams and fans may often have their differences and banter, Hillsborough will always bring us closer together as a city.
