Grand National: A look at the best pubs in Aintree
Ever since it’s inauguration 179 years ago, the Grand National quickly established itself as one of the most prominent sporting events of British society.
It’s estimated that over half a billion tune in to watch the National each year, with punters from all over the globe engrossed in the excitement and atmosphere that typically ensues.

Here, we take a look at some of the best pubs in Aintree to acquaint yourself with ahead of the National.
The Blue Anchor
Situated on the Melling Road side of the racecourse, The Blue Anchor is a family friendly pub which offers a wide selection of food and drinks. Beer and cider drinkers will feel very much at home here and racing fans typically flock to the Blue Anchor prior to or after the days racing.
If the weather is good, a play area/beer garden must be taking advantage of and although you get a mixture of regulars and first timers in the Anchor, its friendly vibe will make everybody feel at home.
The Black Bull
Set just outside Walton, The Black Bull pub is another hot spot amongst Grand National fans. Traditionally a local’s pub, The Black Bull bursts into life come the first week of April with its variety of live music and entertainment.
Most racing fans will perhaps enjoy the afters in The Black Bull but that’s not to say it’s not a great starting point, with a variety of ales, beers, ciders and spirits for patrons to quench their first. Also, the venue caters for all sporting fans so expect a good bit of football to be broadcast alongside the main event.
The Queens Arms
The closest pub to Aintree Racecourse itself, The Queens Arms is arguably the most favourite establishment for racing fans. You can’t generate a stronger atmosphere than in The Queens Arms, with the loud an extensive cheers from the track just yards away.
During the National, expect large marquees to cover the beer garden with a range of entertainment on offer. Most notably, drinkers can really appease their thirst with a whole host of beers, wines, ciders and spirits on offer. If all that gets a bit too much, why not tuck in to some of the traditional pub grub that is served all day.
Toby Carvery
Sometimes, you just can’t beat a good ‘ol Toby Carvery. It’s fair to assume a vast majority have experienced a Toby Carvery at least once in their life, but Aintree’s offering mustn’t be missed on Grand National day.
Perhaps Toby Carvery is better suited to those looking to line their stomachs before an afternoon of debauchery, but that shouldn’t stop those looking to wet their whistle divert their attentions elsewhere. The carvery itself offers a wide range of different foods and the bar is equally well stocked. Well worth a visit.
