Dave Whelan in talking rubbish shocker
Dave Whelan loves his football club and rightly (as a fan and owner) he should. He has taken Wigan Athletic up from the lower leagues to the Premier League and helped to keep them there since 2005.
His latest comments have riled Everton fans to an extent, but most will continue to laugh at the Wigan chairman and his vein attempts to try and keep hold of his manager. Whelan recently said: “Roberto’s always in demand, whenever he wants to go I’ll release him immediately but he’ll only go to a big, big club and I don’t think Everton are big enough.”
This comes almost a year after similar veiled comments at the Liverpool FC Heirarchy in an attempt to keep hold of his man.
Now Roberto Martinez could go on to become a superb manager and he has done well at the clubs he is at, but again Mr Whelan, the largest club he represented as a player is Real Zaragoza making only 1 appearance with the next biggest being Motherwell and as a manager the largest club he has managed was Swansea City. So why does he deserve to go to a big club?
My question is, what would Dave Whelan know about big clubs? As a player he played for Crewe Alexandra and Blackburn Rovers and although they are great historical clubs, neither club could be considered as a big club. As an owner, all he has ever know is Wigan Athletic a club that struggles to attract fans for it’s home fixtures and has only recently exceeded the attendances of its rugby league club.
In business, no one can question Whelan’s ability. He took advantage of an era when business could really boom and he has done remarkably well as a businessman. Even as a chairman you can’t knock him, he took Wigan from division three (at the time) up to the Premier League. His latest comments show a massive lack of respect for a team that has won the top league on 9 occasions, the FA cup on 5 and the defunct European Cup Winners Cup aswell.
We definitely think Whelan should think before he speaks and read up a little on Evertons history, having an affiliation with Wigan maybe we should just tell him to shut his Pie Hole.

Sounds like a typical Everton fan, alooking back doesn’t make you a big club its what you are about to do going forwards.

Everton have History, have they any money? not spent anything for years, he would be going from 1 selling club to another one.
Does money make you a big club now? I wouldn’t call us a selling club. Only 3 I can think of in the last 10 years have been Arteta (who wasnt performing as well as he did and wanted to leave), Lescott for a HUGE HUGE fee and who wanted to leave and Rooney, who wanted to leave. BUT even Arsenal are a selling club and they are one of the biggest clubs in England.
Your losing Moyes, that is the reason why you have been top half so long. You wouldn’t attract a big name manager as nothing to spend. Which is why Martinez is no better off going and as Whelan says “Everton are not big enough”
Again, your arguments are down to money. That is a board failing and not Everton as a club. We won the league on 9 occassions without Moyes, YET the reason we are top 6 is Moyes? Maybe the reasons we were relegation candidates before was Walter Smith and Mike Walker? Managers will be attracted by a team competing at the top of the table, who can offer a long term job. He will have money to spend, with Moyes, Neville and potentially Fellaini and Heitinga going, it will clear around £10m per year in wages and give transfer funds around the £30m mark. With the increased Sky money, the new man should have a decent budget to build on a fairly decent squad of players. As a I said before – “Whelan is a moron”. I don’t care if Martinez comes or not. He will do well if he comes. If he doesn’t he can enjoy the championship with Wigan.
In the modern era of football it does come down to money as the clubs with money are successful and hence ‘big clubs’. All clubs without a substantial backer need to sell to balance the books, which Everton must consider themselves. Why else would you have sold Jack Rodwell to City for £15M??? Plus your 2 best players mentioned in your last post. Hardly the ambitions of a club who want to compete with Europes elite. Dont forget also that all premier league clubs (not wigan) next season will get increased revenue from Sky so thats hardly something to rely upon when attracting new players.
It all comes down to the definition of ‘big club’. Unfortunatly in this modern era history doens’t count as much as money in the bank, Just ask Leeds and Nottingham Forest.
Thats rubbish, only a supporter of a team with no history would say that. I would still class Leeds as one of the biggest clubs in England, despite their current standings. The thing about history is that it doesnt just take into account 10 years or so, it takes a much larger chunk of time. Who is to say that Everton wont get investors in the next year and then have money to pay or who is to say that the owners of Manchester City wont just walk away. Nottingham Forest are now owned by one of the worlds richest men…………… They are still one of the UK’s most successful club and it has been less than 10 years since they were in the Prem…… 10 years isnt alot in football. 10 years ago you were close to the lowest division of pro football.
Lets get one thing straight. We sold Jack Rodwell as he was injury prone and we got a decent fee for him. We couldnt afford to not cash in on a player that may play only 20-30 games per season. He has hardly played since. The other players have all been replaced with better players….or players more suited to playing in our team. We cashed in on Lescott and got Distin who is brilliant. We cashed in on Arteta and resigned Pienaar, got Gibson and Mirallas. We sold Rooney and signed 6 or 7 quality players. Don’t think it has always been done for the money, often it has been done to strengthen.
If you know your history, why would Everton want a manager who failed at Wigan, he has taken a poor mid table team to relegation strugglers. Wake up Everton might not be a European force, but let’s be honest there are 85 teams in the Premier league, Championship and the football league who would like to finish in Everton’s position.
Lets be honest, if Everton make legitimate contact with Wigan for Martinez, Martinez will force Whelan’s hand its as simple as that.
We will see, you appear very confident about that. When Moyes has taken your best players with him to Man U, Martinez would have to start from scratch. I think you should get supporting Arsenal tomorrow as if Wigan do stay up you would have no chance.
