Barry: Leighton Baines is a class act

Gareth Barry has said Leighton Baines is on a different level

Barry, 32, who played his second full game for the Blues on Saturday, said: “I’ve seen from training with him at England and playing against him that Bainesy is a class act.

“You can put him in the world class bracket when he’s doing things like that. Two free-kicks in exactly the same spot in different sides of the goal – there’s not too many players in the world who can do that. He’s not just got that ability to go forward and score penalties and free-kicks though. He’s so solid at the other end as well and if you speak to Sylvain Disitn I’m sure he loves playing alongside him for his defensive duties too. He’s been very consistent for a number of years.”

Barry was joined on deadline day by fellow loan arrival Lukaku, and the midfielder believes Roberto Martinez’s introduction of the powerful striker helped change the game at Upton Park.

“He gave us something different in the second half,” he said. “First half we were just probing and couldn’t really break them down. We didn’t really threaten them much.

“Rom came on and gave us a different type of player up there; he scared them with his pace and allowed us to get space in front of them. He was getting the ball and turning and helping us break.”

Barry said he is thrilled with his decision to swop life on the sidelines at the Etihad stadium with a stint at Goodison.

“I’m hoping that the more I play and the fitness comes up, the confidence grows,” he said. “Winning games will bring confidence too and I’m really enjoying it. Bring unbeaten is great and the longer we can keep that going the better.

“I had no doubt I was making the right decision to come here after speaking to the manager. We’ve got a good core of British players and I love training with them each day. The dressing room is very good and the first couple of weeks have justified my decision.”

The England international was also full of praise for his new boss Martinez, who he said is ahead of schedule in implementing his new methods at Everton. He added: “The fans still need to be patient because for a manager to get his style of play across can sometimes take years, never mind a few weeks.”

“The manager has had a couple of months and the players are trying to adapt. At half time he wasn’t happy with the way we were playing, he said we were not playing the style he wants and in the second half he told us to go and do it how he’s telling us.

“That’s good for a manager to stick to his principles, win or lose. He gave us confidence to go out there and give that second half performance.”

Barry admitted he saw a different side to the Catalan at half-time: He said: “He’s very calm but he’s not frightened to come out of his shell and give a rollicking or two when he needs to. We needed to be picked up after the first half and the manager did it.”
