Baines set to stay at Everton with lucrative new contract offer?

Leighton Baines is set to sign a new Everton deal if Manchester United do not meet the asking price before the start of the season, write Dave Kidd and Steve Bates of the Mirror.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is adamant Everton do not want to sell and it is believed that Goodison chairman Bill Kenwright is only prepared to let him go for £18m.

Baines has not agitated for a move and sources close to the player say he is ready to accept a wage rise to extend a Goodison deal which has two years to run.

The player knows that a move to a Champions League club would help his efforts to become England’s first-choice left-back at the World Cup in Brazil next summer, should Roy Hodgson’s men qualify.

But Baines is not willing to demand a transfer, believing it would disrespect Everton, where he has played for six seasons.

United are expected to table a second, take-it-or-leave-it bid for the England left-back this week.

David Moyes wants to be reunited with his former Everton star and United offered around £10million for the player last month.

United are unwilling to pay more than £12m for the defender who turns 29 in December and would have no great resale value.
